Michigan Southern Railroad Company, a subsidiary of Iowa-based Pioneer Railcorp, has purchased a rail line from Maumee & Western Railroad Corporation.
The line will be operated as Michigan Southern Railroad Company d/b/a Napoleon, Defiance & Western Railway. It will operate about 51 miles of track from Woodburn, Ind., to Liberty Center, Ohio.
“We have purchased this line with the knowledge that it is in dire need of rehabilitation due to years of deferred maintenance,” said Mike Carr, president and CEO of Pioneer Railcorp, in a written statement.
The company plans to rehabilitate the line in order to provide freight rail service and also plans to restore two sections of the track in Ohio from Napoleon to Liberty Center and west of Defiance to Cecil, offering shippers connections to multiple Class I carriers, Carr said.
The restoration objectives have been applauded by the Ohio Railroad Commission, The Defiance Economic Development Council and other local dignitaries, he added.
