Genesee & Wyoming today reported traffic in December 2012 was 74,529 carloads, falling 7,480 carloads or 9.1 percent compared with December 2011, and traffic in the fourth quarter of 2012 was 229,818 carloads, dropping 16,976 carloads or 6.9 percent compared with the fourth quarter of 2011.
Conversely, intermodal traffic in December was 6,191 carloads, rising 8.4 percent from 5,712 carloads in the same month the previous year, and intermodal traffic in the fourth quarter was 18,786 carloads, increasing 9.1 percent year-over-year from 17,212 carloads.
Other commodities in December accounted for 68,338 carloads, decreasing 10.4 percent from 76,297 carloads in December 2011. In the fourth quarter, traffic from other commodities was 211,032 carloads, falling 8.1 percent from 229,582 during the same period the previous year.
The company acquired RailAmerica on Oct. 1, 2012, although RailAmerica’s carload traffic was reported independently. Genesee & Wyoming will report consolidated traffic volumes, including carloads from RailAmerica, beginning in January.
