Federal Funding Helps Metro Move Ahead with Kawasaki Railcar Order
July 28th, 2010On July 26, the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority (Metro) received a formal pre-award approval letter from the Federal Transit Administration (FTA) for the procurement of the transit system’s new 7000-series railcars, which will replace its existing 1000-series cars, using Passenger Rail Investment and Improvement Act of 2008 (PRIIA) funds, allowing Metro to move forward with a notice to proceed to Kawasaki Rail Car, Inc.
The FTA’s pre-award authority for the funds totals $150 million for 2010, which will be matched by another $150 million by the jurisdictions. $80 million will be used for a milestone payment for the 7000-series cars that is due this year.
The authority will acquire 428 new cars. Of these, 128 will be used to enable the expansion of Metro service on the Dulles rail corridor; the remainder will replace the 1000-series cars.
Metro said the procurement of the new railcars complies with a National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) recommendation to replace the oldest cars in its fleet.
“This is significant because it allows us to follow through on a key National Transportation Safety Board recommendation, to address our top safety priority and to continue our work to improve safety,” said Metro Interim General Manager Richard Sarles. “We are grateful to the members of this region’s Congressional delegation and other leaders in Congress for providing this vitally important funding.”
